Wrinkle Reducing Treatment

Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. At Face Renew we use Botulinum Toxin Type A or Vistabel.

Botulinum toxin can be used to treat all wrinkles which are the result of normal facial movement. When it is injected into a specific muscle in the face it blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscle. This means that the nerve ending cannot tell the muscle to move, hence there will be less wrinkling of the skin in the areas treated.

At Face Renew we only treat the upper third of the face as this is where the best treatment results can be obtained, commonly for the reduction in crow’s feet around the eyes and wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does the treatment consist of?

Treatment consists of a series of tiny injections to the area of concern and takes minutes to complete.

Q. How quicly can I see the results?

Results can take up to 2 weeks to become established but expect to see some changes in facial movement after a few days. You will be invited back for a follow up appointment 2 weeks after your initial treatment to check the effects and tweak any areas that might need ‘topping up’. These ‘top ups’ are free of charge.

Q. What are the side-effects?

Side effects include a small amount of temporary bleeding or mild swelling which may occur at the injection site, this disappears within a couple of hours. In some cases bruising may occur, especially around the eyes, but this can usually be covered up with make-up, and is only temporary.

Occasionally, patients experience a headache after treatment, and, very rarely, a rash at the treatment site. Please feel free to take your usual headache remedy such as Paracetamol if you do experience a headache.

When Wrinkle Reducing Injections are administered into the forehead area, there is a very slight possibility that it may cause weakness of the muscle holding up the eyelid causing a “partial ptosis” or drooping of the upper eyelid. This is very rare.

Q. Is there anyone who shouldn’t have Wrinkle Reducing Treatment?

You will not be able to have Wrinkle Reducing Treatment if you are pregnant or breast feeding. If you have a history of any diseases that effect muscle activity, such as Bells Palsy, or any bleeding disorders or are taking any medicines that effect your body’s ability to form blood clots.

Post Treatment and Aftercare

For a few hours after injections do not rub, or massage the treated area, or undertake vigorous exercise. Avoid any form of facial treatment or massage to reduce the risk of the toxin spreading to adjacent muscles where it might cause the eyelid to droop.
